Air Purifying System: Video
Using technology to combat pollution
AIR PURIFYING SYSTEM
Air is one of the major components of life.
However, fast improvement and development in technology in the past recent years has brought more chemical particles and pollutants to the air.
In this project, we wanted to make an air purifier that allows users to know the air quality level in their surrounding.
With this, we hope people can care and realize more about their environment.

How We Did It
Circuit DiagramConnection of the components on the breadboard. | Connecting the Sharp dust sensor to the Arduino boardSharp's GP2Y10 is an optical air quality sensor, designed to sense dust particles. An infrared emitting diode and a phototransistor are diagonally arranged into this device, to allow it to detect the reflected light of dust in air. The sensor has a very low current consumption (20mA max, 11mA typical), and can be powered with 5VDC. The output of the sensor is an analog voltage proportional to the measured dust density, with a sensitivity of 0.5V/0.1mg/m3. | Pure Data FlowFlow of signal sensor pm2.5 converted to number and lights up specifically colored lights based on the number’s value, when MIT App Inventor is connected |

Decoding messages on App InventorWith MIT App Inventor, we are able to present and collect data of air pollution. | MIT App Inventor app interfaceOn the app interface, we included four buttons: ‘connect’, ‘disconnect’, ‘Turn On Fan’ and ‘Turn Off Fan’. Also we added text for status of connection, fan status and PM2.5 index. The Port, IP address and Client Name are all displayed as well. Plus, we added a color index with a scroll down bar of the Meaning of the Colors Displayed: green is minimal pollution; yellow is moderate pollution; pink is serious pollution and red is very serious pollution. Under the labels is a large rectangular display which shows the color signifying the level of dust in the air. | Final PrototypeGoing through the prototyping and scripting process, it gave us some valuable feedback on how design works and how we could interact with mechanics. |
